Kano state government says it will focus on free and compulsory education for all children as part of effort to improve the literacy level in the state.
The Governor of the state, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, said the focus will reduce a lot of social menace in the society often caused by the lack of education.
He said that although the burden of enforcing the compulsory education will be much on the state the venture will be worthwhile.
“Social problems will grow if children don’t go to school so you can imagine the explosion we will have in our schools if every child is enrolled but it is worth it”, the governor stressed.
“The population is increasing, the awareness of education is increasing, the commitment of education is increasing and the disadvantage of lack of education is increasing, so every right thinking person must lay emphasis especially on higher education,” he noted.
Enrollment Quota Increase
The governor who made the assertion while receiving the Provost and management officers of Federal College of Education (Technical) Bichi on a courtesy visit, therefore called on management of the institution to increase the enrollment quota of the state from 60 percent to 80, considering the looming expansion of primary and secondary schools in the state.
“The present administration is more concerned with technical education, pointing out that the essence is to make younger generation self reliant adding that the government would do its best to support the technical institution in view of its pivotal role in the training of technical teachers.” Explained Dr Ganduje
Earlier, the college provost, Professor Bashir Muhammad Fagge said they were in governor’s office to seek assistance from government to among other things, transfer some 10 units of staff houses to the college, provision of tarred access road to the institute, renovation of some burnt down hostels as well as paying compensation on the college’s permanent site.
Kano state currently has a fee education policy from the primary to tertiary education levels but none of the levels is made compulsory.
