2025 IWD: Wikimedia Nigeria trains women on bridging Wikipedia’s gender gap
WikiGap initiative is organised in collaboration with the Swedish Embassy in Abuja
In commemoration of the 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD), Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation has trained over 30 Nigerian women to bridge the gender gap on Wikipedia.
Speaking at the end of the two-day training in Lagos, Omolayo Ogunsiji, the Executive Director, Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation, said that the WikiGap training was to equip women with skills to edit Wikipedia and its sister projects.
Ogunsiji said that the goal was to close the gender gap on Wikipedia by increasing the representation of women in online knowledge spaces.
“Held annually in celebration of the International Women’s Day (IWD), WikiGap is a global movement that encourages the inclusion of more women’s voices and contributions in the Wikimedia ecosystem.
“In Nigeria, the WikiGap initiative is organised in collaboration with the Swedish Embassy in Abuja, a major partner of Wikimedia Nigeria since 2019.

“As part of the IWD 2025 celebrations, Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation hosted a special WikiGap training session, bringing together over 30 women from key partner organisations.
“The organisations include the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (Lagos Chapter) and Women FM Radio Station,” she said.
The Wikimedia boss said that the training focused on editing and creating Wikipedia articles about women, ensuring better visibility for outstanding but underrepresented women in various fields.
She said that participants acquired skills to edit and create articles, contributing to a more inclusive knowledge landscape.
“To ensure sustainability, Wikimedia Nigeria will provide ongoing mentorship and follow-up support for the new editors, reinforcing their skills and engagement with Wikipedia.
“This initiative not only promotes gender equity but also amplifies the voices of women who are making significant contributions to society but remain underrepresented in digital knowledge platforms,” she said.
A participant and Journalist, Omolola Olamijulo, said that the training was an eye-opener, as she was trained on how to edit and contribute to Wikipedia.
Olamijulo said that the training showed her how to pick the right information and reference points from Wikipedia.
