Tajudeen Disu, the managing director of the Lekki Free Zone Ltd was among other persons reportedly killed in a communal clash earlier today.
The fracas occurred in Okunraiye community near Ibeju-Lekki (Lagos) between men of the mobile police force and the villagers.
According to reports by Sahara reporters, the villagers accused the Lagos state government of forcefully taken over their land on behalf of Aliko Dangote and the Lekki Free Zone Ltd.
As a result, the irate villagers embarked on a peaceful protest to stage their annoyance. The villagers claimed they were attacked in the process by the policemen killing two of the protesters.
A local chief who narrated his own account of the incident to the medium said that the Lekki Free Zone Ltd allegedly called in anti-riot policemen of “Mopol 49″ to wade in.
He alleged they had insisted on the forceful acquisition of the community land by the Lekki Free Zone Ltd for the construction of a large petrochemical refinery owned by Dangote.
According to him, the Mopol were reportedly led and supervised to the protest scene by managing director of the Lekki Free Zone Ltd.
As the police officers guarding him and protesters clashed, the local chief said Disu was reportedly killed during the clash while one of the police officers was injured.
The medium reports that the village is currently being raided by Nigerian troops sent to the community as a result of the crisis while many villagers have vacated the village out of fear.
Habib Aruna, chief press secretary to the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos state governor confirmed that Disu died in the fracases. His body has been deposited at the Lagos State University Hospital for a post-mortem.
