The All Progressives Congress (APC) has promised to unbundle the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in a bid to check the corruption in the sector and pass the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) in one year if voted into power.
Spokesman for the party, Lai Mohammed, announced the plan during an inter-party debate on promoting transparency and accountability in the oil and gas sector.
The representative of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Katchi Ononuju, on his part said that the party would ensure the PIB is passed within the first six months of the party’s re-election.
How to promote transparency and accountability in the oil and gas sector formed the focus of the debate between the two major political parties in the country.
The event, which was organised by the Centre for Democracy and Development, started with both parties stating their agenda on the oil sector.
They also spoke on how they intend to check corruption in the sector with both parties also giving timeline within which they would carry out some reforms.
The event was part of a series of debates that intend to help the parties focus on an issue based campaign towards the 2015 general elections.
It is also expected to help Nigerians make an informed choice when casting their votes.
