Chelsea midfielder and Super Eagles talisman, John Mikel Obi over the weekend scored in his club’s 2-0 win over Derby County in the English FA Cup. The goal, a header off Brazilian Wilian’s free kick came in the 66th minute of the encounter.
The goal was memorable for the Jos-born playmaker as it was on the occasion of his 300th appearance for the Blues. The game also witnessed the growing reputation of the Nigerian in a club where he has played for since 2006 as he was handed the captain’s arm-band after fellow African, Michael Essien was substituted.
Mikel is in the running for the African Player of The Year Award to be held in Lagos on January 9 and has Ivorian duo of Yaya Toure and Didier Drogba as contenders for the award.
