The Israeli military resumes strikes on Gaza as a fragile 72-hour ceasefire comes to an end and both sides fail to agree in talks.
Warplanes continued to pound targets in Gaza in the early hours of today after militants fired 40 rockets into Israel.
“In response, we struck 51 terror sites and targeted three terrorists in Gaza,” an Israeli military statement said.
Five people were killed by Israeli strikes, Gaza health officials said – taking the Palestinian death toll close to 1,900.
Israel has lost 64 soldiers during the conflict. Three civilians have died from rocket fire into the country.
The United States said it still hoped the ceasefire – which ended on Friday morning – could be revived.
“Our hope is that the parties will agree to an extension of the ceasefire in the coming hours,” State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said.
Egypt, which is mediating between Israelis and Palestinians, insisted negotiations were making progress.
Meanwhile, two Palestinians were killed and dozens wounded in clashes with Israeli forces amid violent protests in occupied West Bank.
