The Nigerian Presidency has described as a “ruse” the accusation by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the effect that the Jonathan administration has become very repressive as evinced in the restriction of certain State Governors from embarking on a solidarity campaign rally in Ekiti. Governor Rotimi Amaechi had to be turned back from gaining entrance into Ekiti, Oshiomhole was prevented from flying and a slew of other APC chieftains had to go through a tooth comb before touching down in Ekiti where Fayemi seeks re-election against all the odds.
Presidential Adviser on media and publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati said the President remained committed to free and fair elections and the security personnel only acted to forestall breakdown of law and order.
“It is absolutely wrong to accuse this administration of repression. If anything, this administration has been most tolerant of opposition and most respectful of everybody’s right of association. This accusation cannot stand at all,” said Abati.
“Where elections are concerned, it is a known fact that the President is committed to free and fair elections and the integrity of the process,” Abati said.
“Mr. President remained steadfast on his concept of one man, one vote. Security agencies have a duty to stop those who may wish to compromise the process from achieving their aim.” Abati also said the opposition was only crying wolf where none existed.
