The Anambra State Government has introduced disciplinary measures aimed at enforcing school attendance on Mondays, warning that students who fail to show up for classes risk a one-week suspension.

The directive was issued by the state’s Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, during a meeting with the management of Mount Olive Schools and Spring Field Academy in the Government Reserved Area (GRA), Onitsha.

According to the commissioner, the policy follows instructions from the Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, who has repeatedly emphasised the need to restore normal social and economic activity across the state.

The two schools were summoned by the Ministry of Education to explain alleged non-compliance with the state government’s directive on compulsory Monday attendance.

“This measure is in line with the state government’s resolve to ensure full resumption of academic activities on Mondays across Anambra,” Chuma-Udeh said.

She urged school administrators to enforce the directive strictly and ensure that students resume normal academic activities at the beginning of each week.

Schools Cite Parental Reluctance

During the meeting, representatives of the affected schools provided explanations regarding attendance patterns.

The management of Mount Olive Schools told the ministry that student attendance had gradually improved in recent weeks.

However, Spring Field Academy noted that some parents remained reluctant to send their children to school on Mondays, citing safety concerns linked to the long-running sit-at-home disruptions in parts of the South-East.

Both institutions pledged to intensify engagement with parents and guardians to ensure compliance with the government’s policy.

Government Monitors Examination Process

Meanwhile, the state Ministry of Education confirmed that it successfully conducted the 2026 Transition Placement Examination across various centres.

The examination exercise was monitored by Prof. Chuma-Udeh alongside the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Ifeoma Agbaizu.

Centres visited included:

• UNIZIK Demonstration School
• Igwebeze Primary School
• Igwebuike Grammar School

All located in Awka, the Anambra State capital.

The government said the monitoring exercise formed part of broader efforts to strengthen education standards and ensure discipline within the state’s academic system.
