FG Pushes World-Class Cancer Care, Strategic Roads, and Grassroots Development Under Renewed Hope Agenda
The Federal Government is stepping up investments in life-changing health, transport, and grassroots development infrastructure, signalling a coordinated push to stimulate inclusive growth, improve quality of life, and unlock economic potential across Nigeria.
On a citizens’ engagement tour of the South East, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, highlighted three flagship interventions — a world-class Oncology Centre in Enugu, the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway upgrade, and the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme — as tangible proof of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to delivering “democracy dividends” nationwide.
World-Class Cancer Care Now Within Reach
The newly commissioned Federal Government Oncology Centre in Enugu is redefining access to advanced cancer treatment. Housing one of the most sophisticated radiotherapy machines in the world — previously available only abroad or in Lagos — the facility is one of six such centres planned nationwide under Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, with three already operational.
During the inspection, Idris and his delegation met patients already benefiting from the centre’s services, including a woman who had previously travelled hundreds of kilometres for treatment.
“This is democracy delivering tangible dividends. Our visit allows us to hear directly from citizens, see the impact, and ensure these facilities are maintained for public benefit,” Idris said.
From a development economics perspective, decentralising high-end medical infrastructure like oncology centres not only improves health outcomes but also reduces out-of-pocket medical expenses, retains healthcare spending within the domestic economy, and builds local medical capacity.
Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway: Strategic Transport for Growth
The delegation also inspected the ₦100.8 billion Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway (Section Three), a 61km dual carriageway (122km total lanes) being built by CGC Nigeria Limited.
The Enugu-bound section is complete, while work continues on the remaining stretch. According to the Federal Ministry of Works, the project is crucial for:
- Trade Facilitation: Reducing travel time for goods and services between South East and South-South
- Economic Integration: Strengthening logistics for agriculture, manufacturing, and cross-regional commerce
- Safety and Connectivity: Improving accident response times and easing passenger mobility
Modern road infrastructure, as Idris noted, is a “visible testament” to the government’s resolve to complete strategic transport corridors that underpin both domestic market efficiency and Nigeria’s regional trade competitiveness.
Grassroots Economic Stimulation Through Ward Development
In a courtesy meeting with the Federal delegation, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah endorsed the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme, a new initiative endorsed by the National Economic Council to deliver targeted projects to all 8,809 wards in Nigeria.
Governor Mbah described it as aligning with Enugu’s grassroots-focused governance model, aimed at:
- Poverty Reduction: Direct investment in local productivity and job creation
- Food Security: Rural infrastructure to boost agricultural output
- Economic Inclusion: Extending growth opportunities beyond urban centres
From an economic policy standpoint, ward-level investment can unlock rural demand, stimulate micro-enterprises, and reduce rural-urban migration pressures — critical for balanced national growth.
