The Director General of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Johnson Olawumi has said that the scheme would henceforth deploy graduates with first class degrees to teach in tertiary institutions.
Olawumi made this known at a two-day workshop in Kaduna, North west Nigeria ahead of the 2015 Batch ”B” mobilisation programme, VON reports.
“All corps members who graduated with First/Distinction degrees and Diplomas will be posted to tertiary institutions for effective utilisation of their manpower, I therefore appeal to the authorities of all tertiary institutions of learning to reciprocate this gesture by accepting and offering them permanent appointments after service,” he said.
The Director General said the workshop was organised for stakeholders who are to review the policies and challenges of the scheme.
He explained that the new policy was meant to ensure effective utilisation of manpower as well as improve the country’s educational system.
Olawumi added that 410,821 corps members had so far been trained in different skills set through the skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development initiative of the scheme.
Meanwhile, the Kaduna State government has assured the NYSC of its commitment to ensure smooth implementation of its programme and activities in the state.
The state Governor, Nasiru El-Rufai who declared the workshop open said no stone will be left unturned to ensure the safety and security of corps members in all parts of the state.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youths and sports, Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe-Musa, the governor urged the management of the NYSC to cooperate with government to tackle the myriads of problems confronting the nation.
