The maritime industry has been agog with excitement since the appointment of a new helmsman, Mr. Bashir Jamoh for the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
First it was staff of the agency that received the news with glee when they learnt that President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the appointment of Jamoh as the new director-general of NIMASA. Stakeholders in the maritime sector were equally excited as they believed that the Bashir Jamoh’s appointment will bode well for NIMASA and the maritime sector being the first NIMASA director-general to have risen through the ranks to rise to the lofty seat of director-general.
Jamoh has spent over 25 years of professional experience in the maritime industry. Until his elevation, Jamoh was the Executive Director of Finance and Administration at NIAMSA. He is also currently the president of the Chartered Institute of Transport Administration (CIoTA).
President of Nigerian Ship-owners Association (NISA), Aminu Umar praised President Buhari for the appointment as he believed Jamoh’s pedigree makes him a perfect fit for the position due to his deep understanding of the maritime sector. Umar therefore urged stakeholders in the maritime industry to support Jamoh as he has been well prepared for the leadership of NIMASA.
A former president, Shipowners Association of Nigeria (SOAN), Engr. Greg Ogbeifun, equally aligned himself with the position of Umar as he observed that the choice of Jamoh was indeed a good one for the industry since he has all along been an ‘insider’.
Bashir Jamoh has 32 years of professional experience in the transportation and maritime sector. He joined NIMASA in 2003 as an assistant chief commercial officer, eastern and central zones and specialises in logistics and transport management. He started with the Kaduna State government before joining the then National Maritime Authority in 1994. Aside from his official capacity at NIMASA, Jamoh is the current president of the Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria. He holds a PhD from the University of Port Harcourt and a Master’s degree in management from Korea Maritime and Ocean University, a post-graduate diploma in management sciences from Bayero University, Kano, as well as a diploma in accounting from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
Jamoh has since resumed in his new position from March 9, 2020.
