Luis Suarez struck twice as Uruguay kept their World Cup hopes alive with a 2-1 victory over England.
Both teams lost their opening matches and knew a defeat is not an option if they are to stay in the tournament. As expected, the game started with little chances created by both sides.
Suarez tried a tricky one with the first conerkick of the game but Hart was able to prevent an embarrassment with a quick dash to the near post.
Rooney came agonizingly close with a freekick in th 10th minute. With Muslera well beaten, the ball sailed inches over the crossbar.
The match soon developed into a midfield battle as both teams played with caution and struggled to create chances. Poor defending by England gifted Rodriguez a big chance in the 17th minute but he also missed the target by a whisker.
The bar came to the rescue of Uruguay in th 32nd minute when a Gerrard freekick was met at the far post by Rooney.
Uruguay have never lost their first two games at the World Cup but have never got past the group stage after losing their first match.
They took the lead in the 39th minute and it was the man England would have least wanted. Cavani ran into space on the far side and supplied an inch- perfect cross for Suarez who directed a lovely header beyond Hart for his 40th international goal.
England have only won once after going behind at the World Cup and went into the break at the wrong side of the scoreline.
Uruguay came out of the dressing room with a determination to kill the game off as early as possible. Suarez repeated his first half corner kick trick and yet again Hart recovered to get the ball before it could cross the line.
Two minues later, Cavani wasted a glorious opportunity to extend Uruguay’s lead. The PSG forward was put through on goal but could only scuff his side-footed shot wide.
Rooney forced a great save from Muslera in the 54th minute as he desperately sought his first World Cup goal.
He finally got his well deserved goal in the 75th minute, tapping in a fine cross from Glen Johnson for his 40th international goal.
England remained on the ascendancy and Sturridge forced another fine save from Muslera.
And then Suarez stung again. The Liverpool forward lashed onto a flicked header by Cavani and blasted past Hart for his second of the night with 5 minutes remaining.
The South Americans held on to put England on the brink of elimination.
