Out of 1.2 to 1.5 billion tons of chicken consumed in Nigeria, 800,000 to one million tons of the figures were smuggled into the country since 2002.

President, Poultry Association of Nigeria, Ayo Oduntan, disclosed this at a meeting with the staff of the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) in Abuja.

Oduntan said his association’s case against the consumption of smuggled poultry products was not about a “fight for the business of the poultry industry,” but to highlight the hazards inherent in the consumption of the banned products.

“We also have been told that these chickens, because of the chemicals used, once you put it in the mouth, it is not chewy. We have also been told that it is slimy to touch.”

“This is because the broken chain results in high levels of bacteria. A lot of what we say is typhoid, dysentry and diarrhea might have been caused by this high level of bacteria,” he said.
