Minister calls for inclusive participation in 2022 science expo

Dr Ogbonnaya Onu

The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI), Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, on Wednesday in Abuja, called on Nigerians to participate inclusively in the forthcoming STI expo, scheduled for March 14 to 18.

The minister made the call while being briefed by Mr Mike Okokon, CEO of Mirakon Events, on the arrangements and work-in–progress at the venue for the 2022 STI expo.

Onu said Nigerians should come and see what Nigeria STI is able to accomplish within the last one year.

“I am inviting Nigerians to come and see the great strides and accomplishments of researchers in Nigeria.

“Nigerians should come and appreciate the achievements of our researchers because the expo provides a platform to showcase the intellectual capabilities of Nigerians.

“The expo showcases the finished products of what is produced in our laboratories,’’ Onu said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the STI expo is an annual event, organised by the Federal Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

NAN also reports that the expo initiative began in 2017 and has been ongoing for the past six years and the theme of the 2022 expo is, “Sustaining National Economic Growth through STI”.

He said the expo will bring together researchers, inventors, innovators, entrepreneurs, the informal sector among other investors.

According to him, investors are the enablers of research findings to become commercialized.

He said it is important for the nation to start producing some of what it imports from other countries and the annual expo is key to local production and manufacturing.

The minister disclosed that the special guest of honour for the 2022 expo would commission the STI television, receive the three brightest science students in the country, among others.
