Wike’s Victory shows Nigerians can defeat Tyranny, says Fayose
Former Ekiti state Governor, Ayodele Fayose has expressed his delight at the victory of Governor Nyesom Wike in the just-concluded Rivers poll.
Fayose, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, in his latest tweet, commended the people of Rivers state for standing by their current Governor and working strenuously to defeat what he described as ‘tyranny’ threatening the survival of democracy in the country. His words: ‘That the people of Rivers state stood by Gov. Wike and the PDP even in the face of death is a sign that Nigerians are capable of defeating tyranny and this will just be the beginning of more victories over the forces threatening the survival of democracy in our country.’
The Independent National Election Commission had on Wednesday declared Wike winner of the Governorship election in the state, defeating his close opponent and candidate of the African Alliance Congress, Biokpomabo Awara with a margin of 700,000 votes.
The Returning Officer for the election, Teddy Adias, who made the declaration at the head office of INEC in Port Harcourt, said Wike being the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party polled 886,264 votes while Awara of the AAC got 173, 859 votes.
The Candidate of the AAC, Awara had openly been supported by the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi as the All Progressive Congress (APC) did not field any candidate at the poll. In spite of Amaechi’s support, Awara still lost to Governor Wike at the Minister’s Local Government.
While declaring Wike winner at the INEC collation centre, the Returning officer, Adias, who said the Governor had satisfied all the requirement of the law, noted that 249,324 votes did not count in areas where election did not hold or was cancelled due to disruptions.
Expressing his delights after his declaration, Governor Wike, who won in 19 states out of 21, dedicated his victory to God and to those who lost their lives during the 2019 elections in Rivers State.
In its reaction shortly after INEC declaration, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) commended the people of River State and all lovers of democracy across the board for standing firm until the very end to hand what it described as ‘a disgraceful defeat’ to the close opponent of the party.
In its recent tweet, the PDP said: ‘We salutes and venerates all compatriots who were killed by agents of the oppressors during the election. These compatriots did not die in vain and those who shed their innocent blood will surely be brought to book.’
‘The victory demonstrates that the will of the people will always prevail against every form of suppression as were eminently manifested in the desperation by the APC leaders, particularly the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi’, the party added.
As at the time of filling the report, the All Progressive Congress (APC) are yet to respond to the development.
