Police parade suspect, over killing, Ekiti traditional rulers

Ekiti Police Command has paraded one Alhaji Baboga for his alleged involvement in the killing of the two traditional rulers in the Ikole Axis of Ekiti On Monday, Jan. 29, 2024.

Addressing Journalists on Sunday in Ado-Ekiti, the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Ekiti, Dare Ogundare, said it took the combined efforts of security agencies in the state to apprehend the suspect in the forest between Ayedun and Ayebode

He said that the suspect had confessed to the crime while efforts are on to apprehend his accomplices.

The AIG, who said no arrest was made during the rescue operation for the abducted school pupils and their teachers, however, informed journalists that some other suspects had been arrested at Oke Osun, in Ikere Ekiti, Igbo Okah and Iju-Ikere boundary forest.

On whether ransom was paid to secure the release of the Emure abductees, the police boss said that the Nigeria Police would never encourage ransom payment, commending the Inspector General of Police, and the Ekiti State governor for their intervention in the quick release of the school pupils and their teacher.

Answering questions from newsmen, the suspect in the killing of the Ikole traditional rulers, Baboga, confirmed his involvement in the crime.

Ogun Obas express sadness

The Punch reports that the Ogun State Council of Traditional Rulers has expressed its sadness over the reported killing of two monarchs in Ekiti State.

The Akarigbo of Remoland and Chairman of the Council, Oba Adewale Babatunde Ajayi, spoke on behalf of the traditional rulers on Tuesday.

The Elesun of Esun Ekiti, Oba David Babatunde Ogunsakin and Onimojo of Imojo-Ekiti, Oba Olatunde Samuel Olusola, were killed on Monday by gunmen in an ambush, while the Alara of Ara Ikole-Ekiti, Oba Adebayo Fatoba escaped.

Reacting to the incident, the spokesman for the Akarigbo palace and Baamofin of Remoland, Otunba Bayo Onafuwa, said Oba Ajayi referred to the news as sad.

“On behalf of all the Obas in Ogun state, HRM Akarigbo wishes to commiserate with the families of the departed. It is, however, a sad commentary on the state of insecurity in the country.

“Kabiyesi urges the government to do its best by protecting the lives of its citizens. It is now apparent that the issue of state security ought to be revisited as a matter of urgency,” the spokesman said.
