In a major win for Nigerian health innovation, two homegrown digital health solutions—Com-WATCH and RxBot—have been named finalists in the prestigious £1 million Trinity Challenge, a global competition aimed at using data and technology to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and improve access to effective antibiotics.

Announced during a webinar by the Trinity Challenge Secretariat, supported by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and other international partners, the Nigerian innovations were selected from 171 entries across 51 countries, placing them among the final eight that will pitch for the top prize on August 20.

“We are in the midst of an antibiotic emergency. These innovations represent the cutting edge of health data and community-driven solutions,” said Professor Sally Davies, UK Special Envoy on AMR and Chair of the Trinity Challenge.


Inside the Nigerian Finalists: Community Data, AI, and Real-Time Surveillance

Com-WATCH

This solution uses community-generated data to track antibiotic inventory, flag substandard or counterfeit drugs, and improve stock visibility in rural health systems. The tool seeks to plug supply chain gaps that have long undermined public trust and treatment outcomes in Nigeria’s healthcare delivery system.

RxBot

RxBot is a multilingual, WhatsApp-based AI assistant designed to monitor, identify, and report substandard and falsified antibiotics in real time. Targeted at vulnerable populations in underserved areas, RxBot leverages mobile access and conversational AI to democratize pharmaceutical quality surveillance.

Together, these innovations position Nigeria as a rising force in the global healthtech landscape, especially in tackling fake drugs and poor antibiotic stewardship, which continue to burden public health systems across Africa.


A Continental Surge: Africa Rises with Data-Driven AMR Solutions

Nigeria’s representation is part of a larger African tech-health movement, with additional finalists from Cameroon, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The solutions range from AI-powered pharmacy platforms to paper-based detection kits integrated with mobile apps, reflecting the continent’s ingenuity in low-cost, high-impact health interventions.


Why This Matters: The AMR Crisis in Nigeria and Beyond

Antimicrobial resistance is one of the top 10 global public health threats, according to the WHO. In Nigeria alone, nearly 3 million people die annually from treatable bacterial infections, many of which become fatal due to substandard drugs or delayed treatment. Health experts warn that if unchecked, AMR could cause up to 39 million global deaths in the next 25 years.

“Tools like RxBot are crucial in our fight against fake antibiotics. Real-time community surveillance empowers patients and providers alike,” said Dr. Chika Eze, an Abuja-based AMR researcher.

The innovations come at a time when Nigeria is grappling with drug quality control challenges, especially in rural and underserved communities, where access to reliable medicines is often compromised by fake or expired products.


From Pandemic Lessons to Preventative Action

The Trinity Challenge was originally launched in response to the global fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, which exposed massive gaps in health system preparedness and real-time data sharing. The 2025 iteration of the Challenge pivots its focus to AMR—one of the next big global health threats—by funding sustainable, scalable solutions from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

The final award ceremony, to be held virtually on August 20, will feature live pitches from all eight teams. Two winners will share the £1 million prize, earmarked to help scale their solutions and amplify their real-world impact across Africa, Asia, and beyond.
