Mexico’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Marco Blanco says his country would contribute towards enlightening more people on their rights, by translating the articles of the human rights declaration in local Nigerian and Mexican languages.
Mr Blanco, according to VON, made this known at an exhibition organised by the Mexican embassy in Nigeria in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission of Nigeria, to flag off the 20thanniversary of the Commission.
“In the frame of the bilateral cooperation between Mexico and Nigeria on human rights and on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the 20th anniversary of the Nigerian Human Rights Commission, we have provided copies of the translation of the articles of the universal human rights into Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo as well as some Mexican languages. We will later donate the materials used for this exhibition to the Nigerian Human Rights Commission,” Blanco said.
The Director General of the National Orientation Agency, Dr Mike Omeri, added that Chapter four of the Nigerian constitution would be translated into numerous Nigerian languages to enable citizens know more about their rights.
Earlier, the National Human Rights Commission of Nigeria had advised citizens to acquaint themselves with the declaration of the Universal Human Rights, and spread same.
Executive Secretary of the Commission, Professor Bem Angwe who gave the advice said the Commission intends to sensitise Nigerians more on the universal human rights declaration, so as to enable them know and protect their rights at all times.

He said the Commission would soon embark on a visit to the 774 Local Government Areas of the country in collaboration with the National Orientation Agency, to achieve that.
“The Commission will tour all the Local Governments in Nigeria in the next three weeks, to sensitise Nigerians on their human rights. We are not going to do that in English alone but we will do that in local languages and we are going to collaborate with other institutions, like we have collaborated with the Mexican embassy in Nigeria to translate the articles of the declaration translated. I have contacted the Director General of the National Orientation Agency and he has agreed to help us,”Professor Angwe explained.
He thanked the Mexican embassy in Nigeria for the support given to the Commission.
The exhibition featured arts and literary works depicting the cultural similarities between Nigeria and Mexico.
