The Deputy Director, Head of Marketing, National Theatre, Lagos, Henry Ndubuisi, has called for a proper implementation of digital online laws in Nigeria that would address the negative impact of social media.
Ndubuisi, in an interview on Friday in Lagos, described social media as a potent tool that could be manipulated by the user.
He said social media had its positive benefits and negative side.
According to him, there is a need for our government to ensure an effective healthy law that will really regulate the use of social media, giving way to the positive to manifest.
”Any society that uses social media positively and in the right direction will develop in all ramification, contrarily, it can also bring down a society, being the reason regulations is very necessary.
“The idea is for people, our youths especially, to be aware and mindful of things they do on and with social media, as there are practical and obtainable laws against its abuse,” he added.
Speaking on education, the director said: “An educated society is a progressive society.
“If a government does not get its youths educated and meaningfully engaged in skills, they’ll resolve to bomb that would explode to destroy that nation”.
He said there was a need for the government to raise its education budget.
Ndubuisi said even if you have the best infrastructure, it’s educated minds that would operate such infrastructure.
Ndubuisi lauded Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration’s commitment to ensuring improvement in the quality of education on teaching and learning in Lagos State.
He noted that Gov. Sanwo-Olu’s investment in education targeted to secure the future of children in the state and that it was having positive impact in the academic performances of students in various examinations and competitions.
Mrs Doris Isaac, an educationist, said that parents had a vital role to play by monitoring the holistic way their children use the social media, particularly using it for assignment.
According to her, some students are more versatile and knowledge on how to manipulate devices which gives them access to the social media, hence parents should be conscious.
“The world has practically gone digital and our children are moving with the pace.
“However, parents must put a law in place, emphasising that they do not visit sites that will not add academic value to their lives,” she added.
