Nigeria, Denmark Strengthen Strategic Maritime Alliance for Sustainable Blue Economy
Nigeria’s maritime sector is set for renewed growth as the Government of Denmark reaffirmed its commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation with Nigeria, focusing on security, seafarer training, and maritime infrastructure development.
During an official visit to the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) headquarters in Lagos, the Danish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Jens Jansen, expressed Denmark’s readiness to expand its long-standing partnership with Nigeria’s maritime industry.
“The relationship between Nigeria and Denmark spans several decades. Danish companies have been active investors in Nigeria’s maritime space, and we are eager to explore new areas of collaboration, particularly in capacity building, maritime security, and sustainable shipping,” Jansen stated.
Focus on Maritime Training, Security, and Capacity Development
Ambassador Jansen highlighted Denmark’s interest in supporting Nigeria’s human capital development through advanced training initiatives for seafarers and maritime enforcement officers.
He specifically commended the Ship-in-a-Box (SIAB) Simulator Project, developed in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), designed to enhance Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS) operations training for Nigeria’s maritime law enforcement officers.
“We want to strengthen skills and operational readiness through training and simulation technology. Denmark sees Nigeria as a regional maritime powerhouse with immense potential in the blue economy,” Jansen added.
NIMASA Applauds Denmark’s Longstanding Commitment
Welcoming the Danish delegation, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, Director-General of NIMASA, lauded Denmark’s continued engagement with Nigeria and its contributions to the nation’s maritime safety and economic growth.
“On behalf of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, I extend our gratitude to the Danish Government for its enduring partnership,” Mobereola said. “Denmark’s support has enhanced our capacity in maritime security, digitalisation, and seafarer development.”
He noted that Danish firms such as APM Terminals have made substantial investments in Nigeria’s port and logistics infrastructure across Lagos, Onne, and Kano, fostering efficiency and competitiveness in the nation’s trade corridors.
Mobereola added that Nigeria’s renewed focus on blue economy development—anchored on sustainability, digital transformation, and international cooperation—aligns with Denmark’s global leadership in maritime innovation and environmental responsibility.

Nigeria’s partnership with Denmark marks a strategic step in strengthening international collaboration for maritime innovation and security.
