151222161137-star-wars-bb8-xwing-780x439Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, the latest movie released by The Walt Disney Co. has set a new world record as the first movie in history to gross over $1 billion in worldwide sales within 12 days of its release.

The sci-fi adventure movie reached the milestone 12 days after its global release. After only 10 days, it is the fifth biggest film in U.S. box office history.

The movie that previously held the record was “Jurassic World” released in June 2015 by Universal Pictures, which took 13 days to hit that mark.

The new “Star Wars” picture was released in some international markets on December 16, but did not officially debut in US theatres until December 18. It also set a new Christmas day record sales of $49.3 million.

It is widely believed that the return of some of the original “Star Wars” stars such as  Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, along with an impressive cast of young actors in key roles, is responsible for the film’s cross-generational appeal and market success.

The film has yet to open in China, the second biggest film market in the world. It will open there on January 9.
