NCC’s Fine on Telcos Hit N132million Over Violation of SIM Deactivation Order
Findings revealed that the rise was as a result of the refusal of the GSM operators to pay the fine as at September 7, 2015, which was the deadline given by NCC to pay up the fine.
NCC on August 28, 2015, had fined MTN, N102.2 million, Globacom, N7.4 million, Etisalat N7 million, and Airtel, N3.8 million, totaling N120.4 million for violating its order to deactivate all pre-registered SIM cards, all improperly registered SIM cards and all SIM cards that failed to undergo complete registration on their networks.
NCC directed the operators to pay up by September 7, 2015 or risk additional N100, 000 fine per day for each operator.
However, none of the operators has paid and by calculation, N11.6 million is the additional fine, aside the initial fine of N120.4 million, bringing the total amount to be paid as fine to N132 million as of today.
