NAFDAC Vows Crackdown on Fake Products Despite Violent Trade Fair Attack
LAGOS — The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to eliminating fake and substandard products from Nigerian markets—despite a violent ambush on its enforcement team at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex.
During a press briefing on Saturday, NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, disclosed that five officials sustained injuries and operational vehicles worth over ₦25 billion were destroyed during the October 30 operation. The DG, represented by Dr. Martins Iluyomade, emphasized that the raid was part of a targeted operation based on credible intelligence about illicit product distribution within the complex.
Pre-Planned Attack Amid Major Seizure
The enforcement team had successfully confiscated four truckloads of counterfeit and unwholesome goods valued at ₦500 million before being assaulted by assailants armed with dangerous weapons.
“This was a calculated, premeditated attempt to harm government officials in the line of duty,” Adeyeye stated, noting that the attackers specifically sought out the operation’s leader—also Chairman of the Federal Task Force.
A total of 20 vehicles belonging to NAFDAC and other security agencies were vandalized in the fracas, with attackers allegedly seeking to assassinate key enforcement personnel.
Mission to Safeguard Public Health Will Not Be Deterred
Despite the assault at the Lagos Trade Fair Market, Prof. Adeyeye reiterated that NAFDAC remains resolute in its mandate to protect public health and ensure the safety of all regulated products across the country.
“All violators and perpetrators of this attack will face the full weight of the law,” she vowed.
She commended the composure and professionalism of the Nigerian Police and Military, whose presence helped de-escalate the situation and secure the safety of the enforcement team.
Counterfeit Threat Remains High in Nigerian Markets
The DG confirmed that the seized goods breached multiple provisions of the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act Cap. C.34 LFN 2004.
She emphasized that these fake and substandard products continue to pose a severe public health risk, and that federal task forces will intensify surveillance and enforcement across Nigeria’s high-risk markets.
A Warning to Criminal Networks and a Call for Public Support
Adeyeye stressed that the Trade Fair Market incident is a stark reminder of the growing boldness of criminal syndicates operating in Nigeria’s commerce corridors.
She called on market leaders, traders, and the public to partner with NAFDAC in exposing illicit activities and ensuring the sale of only genuine, NAFDAC-approved products.
“We will not bow to violence. NAFDAC is more determined than ever to purge our markets of harmful products that threaten the lives of Nigerians,” she affirmed.
