Kano Targets Historic ₦1 Trillion Budget as Gov. Yusuf Unveils 2026 Fiscal Ambition
Kano State is poised to make fiscal history as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf announced that his administration is finalising an unprecedented ₦1 trillion budget proposal for the 2026 financial year — the largest budget ever presented by any Northern state.
The governor disclosed this on Friday while opening the Second Special Executive Council Meeting convened to review and refine the Kano 2026 Budget draft ahead of its presentation to the Kano State House of Assembly next week.
In a statement by his spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, Yusuf said the landmark budget reflects his administration’s determination to accelerate infrastructure expansion, deepen urban renewal, and stimulate inclusive economic growth across Nigeria’s most populous state.
A Budget Powered by Rising Internal Revenues
Governor Yusuf attributed the trillion-naira threshold to a significant surge in internally generated revenue (IGR) and a sweeping clampdown on leakages that historically weakened the state’s finances.
“We have strengthened internal revenue mechanisms and sealed leakages, enabling us to plan boldly for transformative projects in 2026,” he said.
Fiscal analysts view Kano’s aggressive revenue reforms as a model for subnational governments hoping to reduce dependence on federal allocations and improve long-term fiscal sustainability.
Priority Sectors for 2026 Growth
The proposed 2026 budget will concentrate funding on:
- Mass housing development to ease urban congestion
- Agricultural expansion, with a focus on mechanisation and value-chain optimisation
- Education revitalisation at basic and tertiary levels
- Healthcare system upgrade, including modern primary health centres
- SME empowerment through targeted financing and skills programmes
These priority areas, the governor said, are designed to stimulate job creation, rebuild critical infrastructure, and support a more productive private sector.
Strong Commitments to Transparency & Accountability

Once completed, the draft budget will be transmitted to the Kano State House of Assembly for debate and approval.
If passed, the ₦1 trillion budget will not only be a first for Kano but also a historic milestone for Northern Nigeria — signalling a bold shift in subnational fiscal ambition and development planning.
