Prof. Oyetunji Akinlabi, Head, Department of Metallagical and Materials Engineering, Federal University of Technology Akure, on Tuesday urged scientists and technologists to use available local materials to improve the nation’s productivity.

Akinlabi gave the  advice at a workshop on Chemical Re-engineering, Equipment Maintenance Management and Solar Panel Development organised by the Federal Science Equipment Centre (FSEC), Ijanikin, Lagos.

The workshop  which took place at  the Vocational Skills and Entrepreneurship Study Centre (VSESC), Polytechnic Ibadan, was for the staff of FSEC and other institutions.

Akinlabi said that improved inputs to processes guaranteed products with advanced market edge.

While delivering a paper on “Technical Manual”, he said participants should  activate their trouble-shooting mechanism and use locally available materials to enhance the nation’s productivity.

According to him, Nigeria’s much needed industrial revolution is dependent on the technical know-how of people especially youths.

“With the country still a net importer of daily consumables, should be of concern to everyone of us here to begin to reason for a paradigm shift from that we are used to, to innovative disposition.

“Science and technology are evolving daily, therefore, there is every need for us to follow suit by looking inward to develop methods that can be optimally useful to us,” he said.

Waheed-Adebayo said that solar system were reliable and clean source of electricity that could suit a wide range of applications such as residence, industry, agriculture and livestock.

He said that participants should take advantage of the abundant sunshine in the country and materials to improve the nation’s energy generation for growth.

Earlier in the programme, the Director in charge of FSEC, Mr Yekin Ismaila, said the programme was packaged to challenge the instinct of the participants at proffering solutions.

Ismalia urged participants  to take advantage of the training to broaden their scope and dominate the Nigerian market with locally produced goods.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 60 persons participated in the workshop meant to broaden skills and for the participants to teach  others in their various areas of influence.

It reports that the workshop is in continuation of the centre’s mandate to advance teaching and learning in the country as stipulated by the Act establishing it.
