Death is the most natural thing there is. It was taken away from us a beautiful soul; award winning and popular gospel singer Kefee Don Momoh (nee Obareki) passed on to glory at the early hours of this morning June 13th at the US hospital where she was taken to after she collapsed and went into coma. The ‘Branama Queen’ as she was fondly referred to was in her mid 30s. The Delta State born singer could be referred to as one of the best gospel singers Nigeria ever produced; she was filled with so much talent and passion and that it showed in her works.
Born and raised in a small town in Delta State, Sapele had its own advantages and disadvantages she said in an interview when she was asked about her childhood; yet that didn’t stop her from pursuing her dreams and showing to the world that she had a great deal of talent.
Kefee was a gospel singer, and she did it with a difference. She showed that gospel music could still gain recognition attract its market audience. Kefee was so dedicated and hardworking in what she believed in; and that opened doors for her and saw her share stage with US Grammy Award-winning artiste, India Arie and Tyrese Gibson at the African Festival of Arts in Chicago where she performed in 2011.
It’s so sad and painful that death snatched away a young vibrant woman who was just beginning her journey to greatness. The UN peace Ambassador was also working on materials for her upcoming album that was to be released next year. She spent 8 months in the US where she went to pursue courses in video production and directing.
Hearts are shattered, tears are flowing, questions are being asked; but who are we to question God? We are nothing but mere mortals. Even in death, Kefee will always be remembered and loved by those who felt her impact. She was a woman who believed in herself and what she did. We can only pray and trust she is in a better place.
