Hopes that University lecturers, who have downed tools for 5 months running, would return to their duty posts on Monday December 9 has dimmed as they ignored the government’s directive to return to their classrooms.
The lecturers accused the Federal Government of double-dealing and vowed not to return to the classrooms until the government honors their agreement. The Federal Government had earlier deferred the deadline of December 4 it gave the lecturers to return to work or face sack in order to give them the opportunity to attend the burial of Prof. Festus Iyayi, a former president of ASUU on Saturday in Benin.
But in a communiqué released by ASUU to its chapters on Sunday after meeting in Ekpoma, said that the Federal Government had not met the conditions required to suspend the 5-month old strike and therefore they did not see reason to return to their duty posts. So, will government effect its sack threat now?
